The winter solstice, the longest night of the year, falls on December 21 or 22 in the Northern Hemisphere and June 20 or 21 in the Southern. It is the official beginning to the winter season. Many cultures, religions and spiritual traditions have honored the winter solstice. Often, this time of greatest darkness has encouraged humanity to gather amongst loved ones and celebrate the rebirth and return to the light.

Dong Zhi, the “arrival of winter,” is an important festival in China. It is a time for family to get together and celebrate the year they have had. People make, eat, and gift TangYuan (small, chewy balls made of glutinous rice flour). The roundness of the balls and the bowls used to serve them symbolize unity and family togetherness, a key element of the Dongzhi Festival.

Happy Winter Solstice!
